Released in the USA on December 7th of 2018, ‘Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle’ was set to be the second recreation of the animated ‘The Jungle Book’ produced in 1967 and based off the book written in 1894. Unlike the 1967 rendition, the two newer Jungle Books are live-action. When I say two, I mean two. In 2016, a live-action remake was made, simply called ‘The Jungle Book’. Like the original, it was child-friendly and followed the plot almost exactly, though adding more realistic effects.

People, however, were apparently unhappy with only one jungle book movie because less than 3 years later, ‘Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle’ was announced, not as a sequel, but as a remake that followed with a slightly different story and completely different actors and animation styles. The 2018 remake was slightly darker than expected and showed many bloody and horrible scenes while also changing the characters personalities and roles somewhat. Baloo, the happy bear that Mowgli befriends in the original, was riddled with scars and age while also training the young cubs of the pack. He also had a very pessimistic attitude, a vast change from the original character.

The animation itself was wonderful, though not quite as realistic as the 2016 rendition. The animals seemed to have a more human quality to them than real animals. This seemed to be quite purposeful as they definitely had the technology to make wonderful effects. There is the odd effect that with the human features, the eyes of some of the creatures look dead and severely unrealistic as seen with one character named Bhoot.

Overall, I do believe that this is a great movie, though it lacks the childishness of the original jungle book and lacks the darkness it needs to be an adult movie. Therefore, I believe that it is a good in-between for teenagers, but maybe not something worth clearing time out of their day just to watch. ‘Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle’ is a good movie to download for a long car ride or plane ride.
