BERLIN, GERMANY –

On October 29th, German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that she will not seek a fifth term come 2021, largely symbolizing the end of an era for her role in German politics. In addition, she’s announced her intentions to resign as a German lawmaker come December’s CDU leadership election, though continuing to lead as Chancellor.

The move comes a day after a devastating loss for the CDU party in Hesse’s state parliamentary election. Her party lost 11.3% of the swing as compared to 2013’s levels of support. Why? As Germany’s far-right AfD party took major ground, now entering all state parliaments, her party suffered a disappointment, likely due to her previous open-door policies on immigration & lack of German trust in the government.

After December’s party leadership election, Merkel will likely remain as Chancellor or be ousted by her next successor.
